We have visited many safari destinations in different countries, from iconic Serengeti to revived Akagera in Rwanda. It all started with a desire to see the Big Five and turned into a powerful addiction to Africa and a passion for the journey. With experience also came the understanding that many parks are similar in the sense that you can see the same animals and similar landscapes. Unless you are a pro, you probably will not be looking for something highly unique, and many people going for a “once in a lifetime” experience will not notice much difference — all parks are equally great.
However, after all of our travels, I think that spending more time in just one park is better than trying to see many parks or locations at once. Some of our clients aim to cover a lot of ground, thinking this will provide a better safari experience. We recommend against it, but to each their own. Here, I simply want to share my opinion on why Etosha is the best destination for African safaris on the continent.
Unparalleled Wildlife Viewing: Etosha’s abundant wildlife steals the show. It is a sanctuary for elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes, and numerous other species. The Etosha Pan’s allure lies in its magnetism during the dry season, drawing animals to its life-sustaining waterholes and providing unparalleled game-viewing opportunities.
The only drawback is that Etosha is missing one of the Big Five — buffalo. But they can be found about 8 hours east in the Caprivi Strip. Otherwise, if you are not trying to satisfy perfectionism, Etosha is more than great for wildlife viewing. All the big cats are present, such as African wildcat, serval, lions, cheetahs, and leopards. You can find elephants, many antelope species, snakes, hundreds of different birds, small mammals, aardvarks, porcupines… you name it!

Ease of Spotting Animals: Unlike many other African reserves, Etosha’s wide-open plains make wildlife spotting incredibly easy. It is best in the dry season, as the waterholes fill with animals. Animals gather around the waterholes, creating a captivating spectacle. From the comfort of your vehicle, you can witness nature’s drama unfold as predators stalk their prey and herds peacefully graze.
Compared to other parks, where trees turn green during the rainy season, like Chobe or Kruger, Etosha is mostly open. There are patches of “forest,” but for the most part, it remains wide open.
Budget-Friendly: Compared to several other African safari destinations, Etosha offers a budget-friendly experience without compromising wildlife encounters. Accommodation and park fees tend to be more reasonable, making it accessible to travelers seeking an awe-inspiring safari without breaking the bank. In fact, this is the cheapest of all the parks we have visited. In 2023, it was only $35 for a couple for 24 hours in the park, compared to a whopping $200 in Rwanda. I wrote more about this in another blog post.
Add accommodation, and the difference becomes even bigger. In 2023, Akagera’s cheapest lodge option, not including camping, came to about $260 USD per night, while lodging in Etosha was nearly half that price at around $130 USD. The same goes for Kenya. In Amboseli National Park, the cheapest lodge option is around $300 USD, and the park entrance fee is $60 per person per 24 hours, plus a vehicle charge.
Basically, for the price of 2 nights in Rwanda or Kenya, you can spend a week in Etosha. That is a huge difference, and your dollar can certainly go a long way.
Safety: Namibia is a very safe country. I also have a blog post about how safe Namibia is for tourists. That makes it possible to visit on a self-drive trip. If you are new to Africa, I would still recommend a guide for some destinations, such as Tanzania or South Africa, especially for first-timers. Namibia can be a great destination for discovering the continent and for budget travelers who cannot afford a guide.
The Unique Etosha Experience
A Photographer’s Paradise: The surreal landscape of the Etosha Pan, especially during sunrise and sunset, creates a breathtaking canvas for photographers. The interplay of colors against the vast salt pan and the silhouettes of wildlife against the horizon create scenes that stay etched in memory.
And let’s not forget the other locations in the country that are just as breathtaking.
Namibia’s Distinctive Beauty: Etosha is just one part of Namibia’s allure. This country boasts one of the world’s oldest deserts, the Namib, as well as captivating landscapes like Sossusvlei’s towering red sand dunes. Exploring Etosha means entering a realm of natural wonders unique to Namibia. There is also the Skeleton Coast, Damaraland, the Caprivi Strip, the Kalahari Desert, and Fish River Canyon — all incredible destinations.

Etosha National Park is not just about incredible wildlife; it is a place where nature reveals its untouched beauty. The ease of exploration, budget-friendly options, and sheer abundance of wildlife make Etosha a standout safari destination. Financially speaking, it offers excellent value, and it is good for your soul. Yes, there are actually travel guides and many blogs on the internet that say the same, so I am not the only one making this claim.
With its mesmerizing landscapes and captivating wildlife encounters, Etosha undeniably claims its place in our hearts as the best safari destination in Africa.
